John Marquis scored a second-half hat-trick as Woking secured a dominant 5-2 away victory at Carlisle United on Saturday. The result lifts Woking to 18th in the National League table with nine points from nine games, providing a significant boost to their early-season form.
Shadrach Ogie opened the scoring for the visitors in the seventh minute, finishing from a cross by Jaiden Putman. A long throw-in caused chaos two minutes later, with Carlisle's Chinwike Okoli turning the ball into his own net to double Woking's lead. Matt Ward then made it three early in the second half with a low strike from 18 yards.
Marquis opened his personal account in the 56th minute, finishing a pass from Roy Syla. He then converted two penalties, the first after a foul on Anthony Georgiou and the second for a handball, in the 69th and 81st minutes. Carlisle's Regan Linney scored a late consolation in the 83rd minute.
"I'm delighted with the hat-trick and the penalties - it's a great team performance," said John Marquis. The win extends Woking's unbeaten run to five matches across all competitions, a sequence that includes three wins and two draws.
Woking manager made several substitutions during the game, with Georgiou replacing Ward and Sohna coming on for the hat-trick hero Marquis in stoppage time. The team now prepares for their next match at home to Solihull Moors on Tuesday, September 29.
